Motorcycle Travel

Motorcycle travel is a wonderful way to not only hit the open road as well as the open air. A motorcycle ride can be an exciting and invigorating opportunity to enjoy and experience travel that most people never get the opportunity to relate to.

Lets dig deeper into this and attempt to understand what it requires to undertake such an event.

First of all, one would need a motorcycle. Not just any motorcycle, a motorcycle that would be at the very least, one that is mechanically sound. Of course things and breakdowns do occasionally occur, just as with an automobile, but, there is no reason to increase one's chances of this type of mishap when it will only take a bit of time and awareness in order to solve. It does not have to be a brand new type of motorcycle in order to consider the trip. Many older motorcycles are quite capable also. It only requires a little preventative maintenance in order to prepare for the road.

Tires are one of the most important things to check beforehand. If you need them, then get them. Be sure that all safety features, lights, turn signals, mirrors, and such are all in proper working order. This is where one may want to have a qualified motorcycle mechanic check and look over the mechanical aspects of the motorcycle. This can be money well spent and save you a lot of headache later on.

Make sure that your insurance and drivers license are valid and up to date. Depending upon distance and whether or not one is planning a trip into another country, a check up by your family doctor can also be a good thing. One does not want to be sick while miles from home.

Know how to read a map and be sure to have a compass with you if you intend to ride off road.

As far as carrying items. Take only what is absolutely necessary. Keep the weight of everything as well as the size in mind. You can not take the whole house, nor even half of it. Therefore, limit this to necessities and pack comfortable as well as tight. Be sure to have a rain suit. Odds are, that there will be times when it will be sorely needed. Consider where you are going and at what time of the year and pack accordingly.

Learn about where you are riding to, restaurants, sights, hotels, etc. Thus plan ahead of time. If one is camping along the way, be sure to have the proper gear, as well as a list of campgrounds along the way.

On the road, it will certainly cost more to solve these problems than had one taken care of them ahead of time.

An ounce of prevention will most definitely save a pound of pain, especially when it comes to motorcycle travel.

Five Bicycle Touring Questions for the Newcomer

This is going to be a real departure for me because I know absolutely nothing about bicycle touring. I've traveled much of the country by car, hiked long distances and regularly paddle very long distances in small boats. Every year I paddle in a 100 mile marathon race down the Colorado River in Texas. I love to travel routes that most people never see. Exploring lakes and rivers while high ...
